Meanwhile, I notice that Star Trek has had many instances of "interspecies romance"* (on Earth, that's called bestiality) to little uproar from the theocrat right, but they still haven't had a gay character.
* - Spock was half-human, half-Vulcan. Belanna Torres was half-human, half-Klingon. Kirk did it with all sorts of alien women. Klingon Worf married Trill Dax after fathering a child with a half-human, half-Klingon. Human Riker married a half-human, half-Betazoid. Changeling Odo carried on with Bajoran Kira Nerys. Ferengi Rom married a Bajoran Dabo (sp?) girl. And android Data got a special "love kiss" from the Borg Queen, just to name a few.

I always kind of assumed Sulu and Chekov were partners. And the weren't the tribbles hermaphrodites?
I don't know that "hermaphrodite" is the right word for them.
I kind of got the idea that Tribbles reproduce asexually, from eating the grain in the storage bins.
And if that's the case, maybe they're a pupal form of Mogwai.
